Loyalist Township tackling invasive phragmites

Getting rid of some dangerous weeds

In fall 2024, Loyalist Township staff are joining forces with nearby municipalities to combat invasive phragmites.

The initiative marks the beginning of a regional strategy to manage these plants, which have spread extensively in Ontario.

Phragmites are tall, dense plants with feathery seedheads that thrive in damp areas like marshes and beaches.

Non-native varieties have been pushing out native plants and wildlife by emitting toxins that hinder local vegetation.

Loyalist Township is contributing by dedicating staff time to identify and map phragmites locations using a specialized app from Cataraqui Conservation.

This effort will involve about two weeks of work over September and October.

Once mapping is complete, the team will develop a comprehensive plan to control these invasive plants.
