Major Kingston project to upgrade water and wastewater systems resumes

Watch for notices

Utilities Kingston has resumed a major infrastructure project aimed at improving water and wastewater systems citywide. The Portsmouth Pumping Station Flow Direction and Front Road Watermain Interconnect project will boost system efficiency, reliability, and reduce energy consumption.

Sewage from the Portsmouth Pumping Station will be redirected to the Cataraqui Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant, cutting transport by over eight kilometres.

The project also connects the Point Pleasant Water Treatment Plant to Kingston’s central water system, increasing flexibility for growing demand. Work is expected to run in phases from 2024 to 2028, including upgrades along King Street West, Union Street, and Kennedy Street.

Utilities Kingston will host a public information session on November 27 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the INVISTA Centre to explain timelines, traffic impacts, and project benefits.

Drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists should prepare for delays on Front Road and King Street West during construction.
