Calls for new leader to tackle affordability, health care, and housing
Liberal MP for Kingston and the Islands Mark Gerretsen says Justin Trudeau’s decision to step down as party leader was not surprising but marks the end of an era for Canadian politics. Gerretsen described the announcement as a moment to reflect on Trudeau’s contributions.
He highlighted Trudeau’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic as his defining legacy, pointing to the daily updates and emergency supports for Canadians.
Gerretsen said Trudeau’s focus on fairness, such as tax cuts for the middle class and increased taxes for the wealthiest, helped shape a better future.
Looking ahead, Gerretsen believes the next Liberal leader must challenge Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.
Gerretsen confirmed his plans to run in the next election, calling it an honour to serve the Kingston community.
