Music, the final frontier...

2024: A Sci-Fi Odyssey hits the Kingston Grand Theatre

Space may be the final frontier, but the potential for great music in science fiction is endless.

This Saturday, the Kingston Symphony Orchestra is bringing 2024: A Sci-Fi Odyssey to the Kingston Grand Theatre.

Evan Mitchell is the Music Director for the Orchestra and Conductor for this upcoming Odyssey, and he poured himself into making this the perfect show.

While music is found in all genres of film and television, he said there is something special about the music in science fiction.

One example he likes to give involves E.T., after he watched a video online where someone removed the music from a scene and completely took away most of the emotional impact.

The music selection process was very particular.

Mitchell said that while they have pieces you will recognize after a few notes, like Back to the Future and Aliens, they also have some deep cuts—especially for the Star Trek fans in attendance.

Star Trek, Back to the Future, Aliens, Close Encounters, and more!

Whether you have watched every episode of Star Trek or have only dipped your toes into the sci-fi genre, he said anyone can appreciate the music being played.

That is part of the reason why, for this performance, they will only be playing the songs and will not have movie clips on the big screen.

While it is great to see a film score match an image, there is something special about just hearing that music isolated from its original context.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m.
