Wins award for fighting to protect nature
Canadian musician and environmental activist Sarah Harmer will receive the 2025 Juno Humanitarian Award. The two-time Juno winner, who lives north of Kingston, has spent more than 25 years fighting to protect land, water and wildlife.
Harmer co-founded Protecting Escarpment Rural Land (PERL) in 2005 to stop a quarry project on Mount Nemo. Her 2006 documentary Escarpment Blues won a Juno for showing the beauty of the Bruce Trail. In 2012, PERL helped stop a plan that threatened wetlands and drinking water.
She later co-founded the Reform Gravel Mining Coalition, pushing for stricter rules on the industry. Harmer has also worked with the David Suzuki Foundation, War Child and other groups.
She is the second Kingston-area musician to receive the award, after The Tragically Hip in 2021.
The Juno Awards take place on March 30 in Vancouver.
