Natural gas safety tips for a warm and worry-free season

Utilities Kingston has your back

As winter approaches, Utilities Kingston urges residents to stay safe while using natural gas for heating and cooking. The utility stresses the importance of recognizing gas leaks and preventing carbon monoxide (CO) risks.

“Natural gas is reliable and safe when used correctly, but understanding potential risks is key,” says James Ingram, Manager of Gas Operations.

Gas leaks often emit a “rotten egg” smell, and signs may include hissing sounds or dead vegetation near lines. If you suspect a leak, leave immediately, avoid sparks, and call Utilities Kingston at 613-546-1181.

Carbon monoxide, a colourless and odourless byproduct of incomplete combustion, poses a silent danger. Regularly test CO alarms, replace batteries, and schedule annual inspections of gas appliances with certified technicians.
