The new facility can be found at Providence Care Hospital
Kingston has taken a significant step forward in mental health research with the launch of the Centre for Psychedelics Health and Research at Providence Care Hospital.
The new facility, a collaboration between a local hospital network and a university, aims to study the effects of psychedelics like psilocybin, LSD, and ketamine on mental health.
Psychedelics, known for causing psychological effects such as hallucinations, have been used by Indigenous communities as healing tools for millennia. Today, Canadian researchers are exploring their potential benefits under Health Canada's supervision.
Queen's Dean of Health Sciences, Dr. Jane Philpott, stated that the centre will help build a valuable "knowledge base" to support patients with mental health and substance use challenges. The centre will also focus on chronic pain and palliative care, training health-care professionals, and hosting community workshops to reduce the stigma surrounding psychedelic therapies.
