Another shot at the housing crisis
The City of Kingston has launched the Additional Residential Unit (ARU) Incentive Program to support property owners in creating alternative housing options. This program offers five incentives and grants designed to ease the financial burden of developing ARUs.
Property owners can receive funding through forgivable loans and non-repayable grants, helping them cover project costs. The Detached ARU Incentive offers up to 50% of the project cost or $40,000, while the Interior ARU Incentive provides up to $30,000. Both funds are disbursed as forgivable loans upon unit occupancy.
Additionally, the program includes a $5,000 Accessibility Grant for ARUs that meet specific criteria and a Rough-In Detached ARU Grant for owners installing necessary services for future ARU projects. Lastly, the ARU Servicing Constraint Area Grant offers up to $10,000 for upgrading water services in constrained areas.
To apply, property owners must obtain an ARU building permit and can do so via MyKingston.
