Site currently hosts a medical practice
Kingston staff reccomended designating the Dupius House a heritage property but after much debate over the past few months, council voted 8 to 4 against doing so.
That's because most councillors feel there's special circumstances with this property, despite everyone agreeing the site meets the heritage recommendations.
Councillor Conny Glenn weighed in before the vote.
The house has been a home to to Dr. Ruth McSween's medical practice for nearly two decades, and Glenn says it's not in the city's best interest to move a doctor out when they're spending so much money trying to bring more in.
As a result of the vote, the Dupuis House cannot be considered for heritage designation for at least five years, and developers are not subject to maintaining heritage value if there's interest in purchasing and redeveloping the property.
The vote to designate the property as a heritage site was defeated 4 to 8 with the following councillors in the minority: Paul Chaves, Vincent Cinanni, Wendy Stephen, Mayor Bryan Paterson.
