OHIP demands $600,000 from Kingston doctor

It all has to do with Vaccination Clinics

The Ontario Health Insurance Program (or OHIP) is seeking to reclaim approximately $600,000 from Dr. Elaine Ma, a Kingston-area doctor who organized mass vaccination clinics during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Kingstonist reports the situation began when Frontenac Doctors canceled a drive-thru clinic on October 26, 2024, due to OHIP's claim that expenses for vaccines outside a clinic would not be covered.

Dr. Ma learned she needed to repay funds for previous clinics based on policies from 1998 and 2001. There is uncertainty about whether the demand pertains to one or multiple clinics.

Dr. Ma, recognized for her role in administering 35,000 COVID-19 doses, is currently facing hearings with OHIP.

Dr. Piotr Oglaza, Medical Officer of Health for KFL&A Public Health, supported Dr. Ma during the hearings, expressing concern that a ruling against her could discourage future innovative health responses in public health emergencies.
