Ontario cracks down on homeless encampments

Also targeting public drug use

The Ontario government is taking action to address homeless encampments and illegal drug use in parks and public spaces.

New legislation, introduced Tuesday, aims to enhance community safety while providing housing solutions for those in need.

The proposed Safer Municipalities Act, 2024 includes tougher penalties for trespassing and allows police to enforce public drug use bans through fines of up to $10,000 or six months in jail.

If passed, that would mean that encampments like the one cleared in Kingston would be illegal.

The legislation also gives police more powers to deal with people consuming illegal substances in public places, like parks.

Premier Doug Ford emphasized that families deserve safe parks and that long-term housing solutions are key to addressing homelessness.
