Ontario spends $30M to help firefighters stay safe from cancer risks

Saving those who save us

The Ontario government will spend $30 million over three years to help 374 fire departments reduce cancer risks for firefighters.

The funding comes from the Fire Protection Grant.

Departments can use the money to buy specialized equipment, such as washers for cleaning contaminated gear, and to improve ventilation systems in fire stations.

Firefighters face higher cancer risks due to exposure to hazardous chemicals. In Canada, up to 60 firefighters die from cancer annually, with half of those deaths in Ontario.

This investment, part of the 2024 budget, strengthens public safety while prioritizing firefighter health. It’s a step toward protecting those who risk their lives to safeguard communities.

Among the local departments to receive funding are:

The City of Kingston is slated to receive $82,304.
