OPP reports busy Labour Day weekend with over 1,500 charges

Some are not getting the message

During the Labour Day weekend, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in the East Region were busy, issuing over 1,500 charges.

The traffic initiative, which took place from August 30 to September 2, resulted in a total of 1,653 charges. Key offences included 1,020 speeding tickets, 36 charges for stunt driving, 48 for impaired driving, 34 for distracted driving, and 72 for seatbelt violations.

In addition to these charges, officers issued nearly 500 warnings.

The OPP reported multiple fatalities over the weekend, with investigations ongoing. Inspector Walid Kandar emphasized that speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving are major causes of serious accidents.

The OPP continues to urge drivers to prioritize safety on the roads.

Moving forward, the focus will remain on enhancing highway and roadway safety throughout the East Region.
