City of Kingston buys heritage home for $1.475 Million
The City of Kingston has purchased a heritage home and land at 2312 Princess Street for $1.475 million. This property includes a sizable brick house dating back to the 1860s, along with the front yard and side portions of an empty lot.
Situated in a bustling suburban area, the property is set back from Princess Street and is bordered by the Cataraqui North neighborhood, Rona Home & Garden Centre, FreshCo, and Kingston Gospel Temple.
The acquisition received approval during a closed meeting on October 1, 2024, without any public discussion. Council opted to waive the municipal policy requiring two independent appraisals for purchases exceeding $1 million.
The Kingstonist reports that while city officials have not revealed specific plans for the property, they noted they are exploring options that align with the 2023-26 Council Strategic Priorities. It remains unclear which tax funds were utilized for the purchase.
The site is part of a 1.45-hectare area previously known as Pleasant View Greenhouses and has faced scrutiny regarding a proposed six-storey, 302-unit apartment building.
