Prison staff stop smuggling attempt at Collins Bay

$72K worth of drugs and contraband seized

A package containing drugs, weapons, and cellphones was seized at Collins Bay Institution on Feb. 20, thanks to the vigilance of staff.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) says the package included tobacco, marijuana, “shatter,” ecstasy, cocaine, Dilaudid pills, an edged blade, and cellphone accessories. The estimated institutional value of the items is $72,720.

Details on how it was intercepted are few at this point, but CSC said it uses ion scanners and drug-detecting dogs to prevent contraband from entering prisons.

The agency has also increased security measures and works with police to catch those trying to smuggle items inside.

CSC says stopping contraband is critical for maintaining a secure environment for staff, inmates, and visitors.

The release did not say if charges have been laid in connection to the seizure.  Investigations into this latest seizure are ongoing.
