Queen’s University staff set strike deadline

Workers say they are ‘done waiting’

Queen’s University support staff, academic assistants, and residence dons are preparing to strike after setting a firm deadline of March 8 at 11:59 p.m.. The 1,500 members of United Steelworkers (USW) Local 2010 say they are overworked, underpaid, and undervalued.

Union president Kelly J. Orser says workers are demanding fair wages, job security, and workload protections. The university has already cut over 100 jobs and seen widespread layoffs in 2024, yet negotiations have stalled.

USW members voted 96% in favour of a strike mandate, with plans to hit the picket lines on March 10 if no agreement is reached. The union also wants remedies for Bill 124’s unconstitutional wage suppression.
