Queen’s University workers vote 96% in favour of strike action

Labour unrest in the new year?

Over 1,000 workers at Queen’s University could go on strike in early 2024 after 96% of CUPE members from Locals 229, 254, and 1302 voted in favour of strike action.

The unions represent trades, custodial, food service, technical, and library staff. CUPE says many workers earn below a living wage, with wages lagging 11-14% behind inflation. Trades workers reportedly make $10-15 an hour less than other Kingston employers, forcing some employees to take multiple jobs.

CUPE 229 said Queen’s is neglecting its workforce, students, and facilities.

Queen’s University says it values its employees and is engaged in active negotiations with several unions. The university is committed to reaching agreements and provides updates on its Labour News website.

With all three locals in conciliation, a labour disruption at Queen’s University and Aramark is a real possibility in the new year.
