Charged is the operator of the boat that was hit
A second person has been charged following the deadly boat collision on Bobs Lake that killed three young adults and injured five others on May 18.
Dakota Fillion, who was on a fishing boat during the crash, faces charges under the Canada Shipping Act for allegedly failing to display the boat’s required lights and not having enough lifejackets.
The charges fall under sections of the Act covering lighting on power-driven vessels and lifejacket requirements. Fillion’s first court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 13 at the Montreal Street provincial courthouse.
The collision happened around 9:30 p.m. in the Buck Bay area when a speedboat, driven by Matthew Splinter, struck Fillion’s boat, ending up on top of it. The victims, all in their early 20s, were identified as Riley Orr, Juliette Cote, and Kaila Bearman.
Splinter, 44, was charged in October with 12 criminal offences, including dangerous operation of a vessel causing death.
