Water safety alert issued for Cataraqui region amid heavy rainfall

Recent rain could elevate water flows and make shorelines slippery

Cataraqui Conservation issued a Water Safety Statement for the region, urging caution near shorelines and waterways. The warning comes as significant rainfall poured down over the weekend with above-zero temperatures.

The forecasted conditions may cause elevated water flows, particularly around dams, as water managers work to control inflows. Residents are advised to avoid areas near dams, fast-moving watercourses, and slippery shorelines. Ice conditions may also deteriorate with the warm temperatures, and Cataraqui Conservation warns that no ice is entirely safe.

Although widespread flooding is not expected, localized flooding in low-lying areas and road ponding could occur. For assistance or to report flooding, residents should contact their local municipality. The statement will remain in effect until January 6, 2025.
