Weekend crash in Quinte West leaves three dead

One family member survives

A weekend tragedy has destroyed a family.

A two-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Quinte West claimed three lives and left one seriously injured.

The collision occurred at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, in the westbound lanes near the County Road 40 interchange, involving a minivan and a tractor-trailer.

Traffic had slowed due to an earlier collision further west. Quinte West OPP, Quinte West Fire and Emergency Services, and Hastings-Quinte Paramedic Service responded.

A 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman in the minivan were pronounced dead at the scene, while an eight-month-old child later died in hospital. A four-year-old was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre with serious injuries.

All victims were from Laval, Quebec. The tractor-trailer driver was uninjured.

The westbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed for several hours for investigation.

The Quinte West OPP, with assistance from the Technical Collision Investigation Team and the Chief Coroner's Office, is continuing its investigation.
