Public Urged to Take Precautions
West Nile Virus (WNV) has been detected in mosquitoes across the KFLA region.
The virus is spread by mosquito bites and cannot be transmitted directly from birds to humans or through person-to-person contact.
Although severe cases are rare, symptoms can include fever, headache, and muscle weakness. Severe illness, such as encephalitis, affects about 1 in 150 people and requires immediate medical attention.
To protect yourself and your family, use Health Canada-approved insect repellents with DEET or Icaridin. Wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothing, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Ensure your home has intact screens, remove standing water, and cover rain barrels with screens.
If you find a dead bird, avoid direct contact and report it to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative.
