Flood protection measures to begin
Abbey Dawn Road will be fully closed from Highway 2 to Madoma Marsh starting Monday, Oct. 21, as construction begins on vital flood protection measures. This project aims to address flooding issues caused by changing water levels in the St. Lawrence River and Madoma Marsh.
The work is expected to last through winter, with completion anticipated in spring 2025, weather permitting. Detour signs and message boards will be installed to help guide drivers around the closure.
Construction will involve raising road elevation, installing larger culverts, and upgrading shorelines. Features from the City’s approved Waterfront Master Plan will also be included along St. Lawrence Avenue and Abbey Dawn Road.
The Government of Canada is supporting this project with over $9.8 million for city-wide shoreline upgrades through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund. These efforts aim to protect residents and infrastructure from future flooding and enhance community resilience.
