Flush wisely: Kingston residents urged to protect plumbing

Utilities Kingston is reminding residents to be mindful of what they flush to prevent costly sewer backups and protect home plumbing. Improper disposal of waste, such as non-flushable items and fats, oils, and greases (FOGs), can cause severe blockages. These backups not only damage household plumbing but also increase maintenance costs and strain the city’s sewer system.

To keep things running smoothly, Utilities Kingston advises flushing only the three Ps: pee, poo, and toilet paper. Items like wipes, paper towels, menstrual products, dental floss, and food waste should go in the garbage.

FOGs should never be poured down the sink. Instead, collect them in a container and dispose of them in the trash. Free FOG collection cups are available at the Utilities Kingston office, located at 85 Lappan’s Lane.

The city notes that by following these simple tips, residents can avoid expensive repairs and help maintain the city’s sewer system.
