Kingston streets are going to be busy on Thursday night
With Halloween night fast approaching, both motorists and pedestrians are reminded to take extra precautions to ensure everyone enjoys a safe and festive evening.
Excited trick-or-treaters often wander into streets and yards, which can make for a challenging environment for drivers and parents alike.
Here are some key tips to stay safe this Halloween:
For Motorists
Stay Alert and Focused: Be extra vigilant when driving through neighbourhoods. Trick-or-treaters, especially younger children, may dart into the road unexpectedly. To prevent accidents, remove distractions like phones and continually scan the road, sidewalks, and areas between parked cars.
Reduce Speed: Even if you’re in a hurry, slow down in residential areas. Obey all traffic signs, and give yourself additional time to reach your destination. Slower speeds mean you’re more likely to spot pedestrians and have time to react.
Use Headlights Earlier: Children need to be able to see cars clearly, so turn on your headlights 30 minutes before sunset, even in low-light conditions. This makes your vehicle more visible to those around you.
For Pedestrians
Use Sidewalks and Safe Crossing Points: Stick to sidewalks where possible. If sidewalks are unavailable, walk on the far-left side of the road, facing oncoming traffic, and always cross streets at marked crossings. A quick look both ways is essential, as not all drivers may be fully attentive.
Stay in Groups: It’s best for younger children to trick-or-treat with a responsible adult or older sibling. Older children, while capable of more independence, should still stay in groups for added visibility and safety.
Make Yourself Visible: Equip children with a flashlight (facing downward in their trick-or-treat bags) and consider adding reflective tape to costumes. Brightly coloured costumes are a better choice than dark ones, helping drivers spot trick-or-treaters more easily. If using face makeup instead of masks, kids will also have a clearer view of their surroundings.
Dress Appropriately for Weather: Make sure costumes and coats do not hinder visibility or movement. Dress for the weather but avoid hats or accessories that block vision, and check that any costume pieces do not obstruct hearing.
