Kingston backs new sleeping cabins

$500,000 boost committed to the cause.

City councillors have decided to support a new sleeping cabins project, encouraged by private sector backing and the chance for a permanent location.

On Tuesday, the council voted 12-1 to contribute up to $500,000 to the Crossroads Village project. This includes $150,000 for planning and legal needs and up to $350,000 for capital costs.

The funds will support Our Livable Solutions' proposal to set up sleeping cabins and a support building behind Crossroads United Church on Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard. Currently, the cabins are at their summer location at Centre 70.

In past votes, council decided to end municipal support for the project, reaffirming this decision in April. However, after hearing from project supporters about the benefits of a stable home, the council chose to back the new initiative.
