Kingston Police: Fake Google Chrome and 4K Sports apps target Android devices in malicious scam

You may not give much thought to downloading an app onto your phone, but apps can pose significant risks.

Recently, Kingston Police say cybercriminals have targeted Android devices with malicious apps, including a fake Google Chrome app and a fraudulent sports streaming app called 4K Sports.

Downloading these apps installs malware on your phone, enabling cybercriminals to access your device without your knowledge. This malware can record keystrokes, control your phone remotely, and access your contacts to send them malicious links. These links lead to web pages with more harmful apps, perpetuating the spread of malware.

To protect yourself from such scams, follow these tips:

• Only download apps from trusted sources like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Avoid third-party websites and links in texts or emails.
• Read reviews and research apps before downloading, especially lesser-known ones.
• Don't click on suspicious links in unexpected messages, even if they seem to come from someone you know.
