Stay safe and celebrate responsibly

As Queen’s University prepares to welcome alumni back to campus for Homecoming, the City of Kingston is gearing up for a weekend of celebrations with a focus on safety and community.

Homecoming weekend is expected to bring a vibrant mix of arts, culture, and entertainment to the downtown area, with multiple events set to take place. Key venues like Musiikki, The Buckle, and The Toucan will offer live music each night, while the Kingston Grand Theatre and Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts will host high-profile shows, including performances from Ron James and Machine de Cirque. For a complete event list, residents and visitors are encouraged to visit Kingston Live and the Kingston Arts Council websites.

In addition to the festivities, the University District Safety Initiative will be in effect from October 17th through November 3rd. This means an increased presence of bylaw officers and police in the University District to ensure a safe and peaceful environment. Residents, students, and visitors are urged to avoid high-risk behaviors, with the Nuisance Party Bylaw and related fines in full effect. Penalties range from $500 for failing to comply with orders to leave premises, to $2,000 for hosting a nuisance party.

“Queen’s University students are a vital part of our Kingston community,” said Kyle Compeau, Director of Licensing & Enforcement at the City of Kingston. “We want everyone to enjoy the weekend safely and responsibly. Let’s look out for one another and avoid actions that could strain emergency services or lead to costly penalties.”

Due to ongoing construction in the University District, road closures will be in effect on Union Street and Aberdeen Street, and several parking restrictions will be implemented between October 18th and October 20th, as well as the following weekend. The city emphasizes the importance of keeping streets clear for emergency vehicles, especially with construction projects limiting access on key routes.

“We remind everyone to respect construction sites and avoid large street parties that may block emergency access,” added Compeau. “Your safety and the safety of others depend on keeping roadways clear.”

As Homecoming approaches, Kingston encourages all guests and residents to enjoy the events responsibly, stay mindful of their surroundings, and contribute to a fun, safe, and memorable weekend for all.
