Survey says things have yet to get better
If you're still struggling to get your head above water here in Kingston, you're not alone. A new Angus Reid Institute survey shows that more than half of Canadians are finding it difficult to keep up with food expenses.
The poll found that 51 per cent of respondents struggle with household food needs, a figure that has stayed steady since late 2021.
Among households with annual incomes under $50,000, 65 per cent said rising costs are becoming harder to manage.
However, it’s not just low-income Canadians feeling the pinch. The survey showed that 25 per cent of people with household incomes above $200,000 are also facing financial challenges.
The study asked Canadians how they feel about their financial outlook, with 33 per cent saying they are “struggling.” Another 22 per cent feel “uncomfortable,” while 23 per cent report “thriving.”
Despite the challenges, the survey found some good news. Fewer Canadians say they are worse off now than a year ago, and fewer expect their situation to decline in the next 12 months.
