Is cannabis use safe for seniors? Public Health has some advice
Cannabis use among older adults has become a growing concern, especially with stronger products available today.
Dr. Linna Li, Deputy Medical Officer of Health for South East Health Unit, and Mandy Fleming, Health Promoter, joined us to talk about the risks and benefits for seniors.
Dr. Li says it's important to know that cannabis potency has increased significantly since legalization.
The doctor also says seniors, particularly those with existing health conditions or on medications, may be more vulnerable to its effects.
While cannabis may offer relief for chronic pain and anxiety, it also poses risks like falls, increased heartbeat, and potential addiction, Fleming advises seniors to speak to their primary care provider to make sure they understand the potential problems.
For more information, seniors can visit the South East Health Unit’s website and the Cannabis tab for helpful resources and guides.
