Be prepared for anything: Public Health's got your back

The South East Health Unit is urging residents to prepare for winter weather that could disrupt daily life with power outages, icy roads, and supply delays.

Deputy Medical Officer of Health Dr. Linna Li says the Health Unit's role in Emergency Preparedness is pretty straight forward.

The health unit says an emergency kit is essential. Spokesperson Kim McCann says having a timeline helps prepare.

Your kit should include non-perishable food, bottled water, medications, a first aid kit, blankets, flashlights, and batteries. Residents should also have a family plan with a meeting point and an emergency contact outside the area.

McCann also has a healthy reminder for anyone planning to use grill up some food during an emergency.

Travelers are advised to stay home during storms, but if travel is necessary, winter tires and a vehicle survival kit are must-haves. Always check road conditions and notify someone of your plans.

Post-storm, watch for icy surfaces and avoid injuries by shoveling safely. Dress for extreme cold to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
