Country singer Brett Kissel was fined $100 after performing a song before his concert at Kingston’s Grand Theatre on March 27.

Kissel played for a small group of about 12 people during a VIP meet and greet, including super fan Drew Cumpson. Cumpson, former NDP candidate for Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston, requested the song I Didn’t Fall in Love With Your Hair. Kissel decided to perform it, even though he usually avoids singing during meet and greets.

The Alberta-born musician later explained on Facebook that union rules don’t allow artists to be on stage before a show. He said he was only grabbing his guitar when he received the fine.

Kissel wasn’t angry about the small penalty but found it ridiculous. He said, "Sometimes you have to break rules to make memories."

The Grand Theatre has not publicly commented on the fine.
