Homeowners and contractors should contact Ontario One Call before digging.
As spring projects begin, Utilities Kingston is reminding homeowners and contractors to contact Ontario One Call before digging. It’s free, easy, and the law.
Robert Bowen, Supervisor of Inspection & Support Engineering at Utilities Kingston, says underground hazards like gas lines and cables can be just below the surface. Hitting them could cause serious injury, property damage, or service outages.
“Striking a gas line, electric cable or high-pressure pipe could result in property damage, or worse, serious or fatal injuries,” Bowen said.
Despite the risks, one in four residential digging projects in Ontario leads to accidental damage, according to Ontario One Call’s 2024 Awareness Study. Alarmingly, 57 per cent of homeowners don’t know that a locate is legally required.
Whether you're planting a tree, digging a garden, or building a fence, call Ontario One Call at least five business days before starting. Stay safe and prevent costly damage this spring.
