Kingston may quit X as social media site loses followers and sparks concerns

In February, the city turned off replies and direct messages on X.

Kingston City Council is thinking about leaving the social media site X, formerly known as Twitter.

A new motion suggests the city stop using the platform because of falling engagement and growing concerns about its content.

The motion, brought forward by Sydenham District Coun. Conny Glenn, says the site no longer fits with Kingston’s values. The city is worried about misinformation, harassment, and offensive comments on the platform. Officials also say recent changes to X make it harder to track engagement and plan communications.

The city joined X in 2008 and has made nearly 41,000 posts. Its account has over 50,400 followers, but that number has dropped by 3.7 per cent recently. Engagement is down 18 per cent.

In February, the city turned off replies and direct messages on X. Council will debate the motion at its Tuesday night meeting.

The city also runs other social media accounts.
