Kingston shooting suspect struggles to find a lawyer while in jail

Cameron Floyd Dean appeared by video in Kingston bail court on Apr. 2nd

A man accused in a downtown Kingston shooting is having trouble finding a lawyer while in jail.

Cameron Floyd Dean appeared by video in Kingston bail court on Apr. 2, 2025, from Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay.

The Kingstonist reports he told Justice of the Peace Ruth Campbell he had tried to contact Toronto lawyer Alison Craig twice, but jail staff refused him access.

Dean, previously represented by Kingston lawyer David Crowe, is now searching for new counsel. Crown attorney Shawn Eagles noted that a different lawyer had declined to represent him at a past hearing.

Dean, who has a Legal Aid certificate, said the jail was under lockdown for six days due to staff shortages. Campbell suggested he return next week with an update.

Kingston Police arrested Dean in Toronto on Jan. 9, 2025. He faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and discharging a firearm with intent, after a Jan. 4 shooting left one person injured.
