Measles outbreak in Hastings County surges

South East Health Unit urges vaccinations

A measles outbreak in Hastings County has grown dramatically in just one week, prompting the South East Health Unit (SEHU) to recommend vaccines across its region.

The number of cases in Hastings County jumped from 9 on March 5 to 32 by March 12. All reported cases involve individuals who were not previously immunized against measles.

SEHU officials stress the importance of up-to-date vaccinations to protect individuals and reduce the spread of the virus. As of March 12, Ontario has reported a total of 372 measles cases across 11 health units, making this the worst measles outbreak in the province in 30 years.

Dr. Piotr Oglaza, SEHU’s medical officer of health, emphasized that the measles vaccine is highly effective in preventing the disease and its complications.

SEHU encourages individuals to review their vaccination status, especially those born before 1985. People born before 1970 are generally presumed to have immunity.
