Meet the Candidates: Kingston and the Islands Liberal Mark Gerretsen

Incumbent MP looking to return to Ottawa to represent the community

Mark Gerretsen is looking to keep the riding of Kingston and the Islands in red for another four years.

The Liberal candidate and incumbent spoke with KingstonDaily.ca about the federal election and what he has been doing during the campaign.

Gerretsen, who has won the riding for the Liberals the last three elections, says one issue he has been hearing from residents is the threat of tariffs coming from the United States.

Gerretsen believes party leader Mark Carney is the one who can put Canada in a position where they can combat any economic threats that comes their way.

He believes voters are having that same sentiment.

Gerretsen believes his background in politics, not only on the federal level but also when he previously served as Mayor of Kingston, gives him an advantage over his challengers.

Gerretsen is running again despite some of the turmoil that had plagued the Liberals prior to Justin Trudeau stepping down as party leader and Prime Minister.

Many current Liberal MPs announced earlier that they would not be seeking re-election but Gerretsen says both he and the party still have a lot to offer.

The riding of Kingston and the Islands has been a Liberal stronghold, and the party has seen a rise in popularity since Carney became leader.

But Gerretsen says he will not be counting chickens before they are hatched.

Voters head to the polls on April 28.
