Striking student workers at Queen’s University are now in their second week on the picket line, waiting for a new offer from the school.
About 2,000 graduate students, represented by PSAC Local 901 — Unit 1, walked off the job on March 10. They are asking for a living wage, better funding, paid course development, lower tuition, and mental health support.
Union president Jake Morrow tole the Whig-Standard, some students earn less than half of minimum wage. He also criticized Queen’s for spending on security and executive salaries instead of helping workers.
The university says it has contingency plans to keep classes running. However, faculty members say courses, midterms, and labs have been disrupted. More than 150 professors have signed a letter supporting the strike.
Queen’s latest offer includes small wage increases and a lump sum payment. Morrow called it “out of touch” and said support for the strike is growing.
