Here’s how the city is fixing the roads
Pothole season is back in Kingston, and the city is gearing up for repairs. Warmer temperatures and freeze-thaw cycles are causing asphalt to crack, leading to thousands of potholes across local roads.
The Whig-Standard reports that last year, more than 14,000 potholes were filled, a drop from 22,000 the year before. The number to be fixed this year is now being determined.
The city is using AI-powered CityROVER cameras to find the potholes and log their locations. Crews temporarily fill them with cold mix asphalt, with permanent repairs using hot mix asphalt coming when the temperatures rise.
The city needs the help too. Queen Street was recently ranked fourth on CAA’s 2024 worst roads list in eastern Ontario thanks largely to the potholes.
Residents can report potholes online or call 613-546-0000 for repairs.
